Can I add sherbert to this alcoholic punch?

My hubby makes punch every year for our annual Halloween party that he simply calls "goblin punch." It’s (of course!) a very top secret recipe, so even I’m not allowed to know everything that goes in. However I am certain that the base ingredients are vodka, rum and fruit punch.

Now I’ve made sherbert punch for parties before but never with alcohol in it so my question is this – will it be safe to try putting some sherbert in the goblin punch this year? My only concern is that the combination of alcohols might curdle the milk in the sherbert and make people sick.

Has anyone ever done this before? Is it safe?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

You can add the sherbet, it won’t curdle. I make two punches for my dinners all the time, especially Thanksgiving, one is "spiked" and the other isn’t. I’ve never had a sherbet curdle or anyone get sick.

Sherbet contains very little actual dairy; "Sherbet in the United States must also include dairy ingredients such as milk or cream to reach a milkfat content between 1% and 2%. Products with higher milkfat content are defined as ice cream; products with lower milkfat content are defined as water ice"

If you were to leave it out for and extended period without keep it chilled, it might eventually curdle. Here’s a sample recipe for a drink containing a lot more dairy than adding sherbet to punch would, it has milk and alcohol:

    Rum Milk Punch
    – 2 oz Light Rum
    – 4 oz Milk
    – 1 tsp Superfine Sugar
    – Garnish: 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
    – Glassware: Collins Glass

Shake all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into a collins glass. Garnish with the Nutmeg.

The sherbert will be just fine!

You can add the sherbet, but the alcohol will melt it fairly quickly, so be sure to add it only at the last minute, and pehaps not all at once.
